Tribute to My Father, "Wild Bill"

September Newsletter

On this Labor Day, I find myself reflecting on the incredible man my father, "Wild Bill," was. It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since he crossed over, yet his presence remains as strong as ever in my life. My father was the epitome of hard work and dedication—a welder by trade who spent his career at Chrysler, never shying away from the grind. Throughout his career and long past retirement, he ran his own business on the side, fulfilling (what was for me!) a mysterious government contract. At just 11 years old, I would help him in our basement, putting on rubber gloves to glue together parts he would later weld. Though I never knew exactly what we were making, I always joked that I had a government job as a kid!

"Wild Bill" was more than just a hard worker; he was a man of vitality and strength. For years, he was a fixture at the YMCA, going six or seven days a week. He learned and practiced Tai Chi and Karate. Even into his later years, he remained active and full of life. And let’s not forget his love for Werther's hard candy—something that continues to bring a smile to my face whenever I find a wrapper in unexpected places. Since his passing, these little signs have become a cherished connection between us, reminding me that he’s still with me, guiding and loving me from the other side.

Not long after my father transitioned, he reached out to tell me, "Donna, your mother will be coming soon." True to his word, about six months later, my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and as I’ve shared with you, crossed over this summer. It was a heart-wrenching time but knowing that my father was there to welcome her brought me comfort.

On this Labor Day, I honor my father not only for his tireless work but for the love and connection we continue to share. "Wild Bill," your spirit is still very much alive in my heart, and I am forever grateful for the signs you send me. I love you, Dad. Thank you for being a wonderful symbol of what Labor Day is all about.

Love,

Donna
